Impactful Read Alouds in Early Literacy Microcredential

The Impactful Read Alouds in Early Literacy Microcredential helps to prepare candidates and community members in building a solid foundation in language and literacy development of young children. It will prepare employees, civic leaders, volunteers, and learners to appropriately deliver a storytime or literacy experiences with young children in a way which contributes to a solid foundation for later literacy learning. Employers who have employees or volunteers with this microcredential can be assured that the employee will have a general knowledge base relating to effective story sharing with young learners.

We鈥檙e honored to partner with Malcolm Mitchell, the Georgia Reads Coach and Founder of the Share the Magic Foundation. In his statewide role, Malcolm is a core catalyst for Georgia鈥檚 literacy movement鈥攚orking across schools and communities to inspire children and equip adults with the skills, strategies, and connections with children that make reading come alive. To earn this microcredential, learners will watch a video, 鈥淚ntroducing Reading With Children鈥, in which Malcolm joins Master Teacher Whitini Coleman of the Kenan Preschool at Atlanta Speech School. This microcredential serves as the foundation and introduction to understanding the power of language and literacy and its impact on the success of children in learning, and on the overall society.

鈥淩eading is the most self-empowering tool a person could possess.鈥  鈥擬alcolm Mitchell

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify effective read aloud strategies for young children
  2. Identify the focus of a book
  3. Recognize the power of reading and conversation with children

This microcredential is the first step in a stackable early language and literacy credential which will provide a pathway to a concise delivery of concepts and skills suggested by the science of reading and supports the attainment of structured literacy knowledge for future practitioners who work with children. It can be the beginning level of achieving the stackable microcredential or serve as a stand-alone step for supporting people who wish to share stories and books with young children in powerful and effective ways.
