Discussing Trends in Information Technology

IT Distinguished Colloquium Series provide an opportunity for faculty members of the department to share their research and ideas with each other. This can lead to collaboration and new partnerships, as well as sparking new research directions. Colloquia provide a forum for discussing current topics and trends in the field. This can help keep everyone up-to-date on the latest developments, and ensure that the department remains at the forefront of the field. Colloquia can help develop critical thinking and presentation skills. By presenting their research to their peers, members of the department can receive valuable feedback and learn to better articulate their ideas.

Graduate students are highly encouraged to attend the IT Distinguished Colloquium Series. GRAs who is currently working with the professors are highly recommended to attend the colloquium.

Committee Chair: Dr. Liang Zhao

Committee members: Dr. Lihn Le, Dr. Ying Xie, Dr. Nazmus Sakib, Dr. Yixin Xie

IT DISTINGUISHED COLLOQUIUM SERIES, September 11, 2025, 1:00-2:00 P.M.(Dr. Jiaqi Gong, University of Alabama)

Title: Automated Data Science: From Knowledge to Story and Societal Impact

When: Thursday, September 11, 2025,  1-2 p.m.

Where: J-1050

  • Automated data science is emerging as a powerful paradigm for transforming how we generate ideas, integrate knowledge, and translate insights into real-world impact. This talk explores how advances in knowledge representation and multimodal data fusion can provide a foundation for curating and organizing complex information, while new approaches to scalable coaching and data storytelling enable creative and accessible communication of analytical results. Building on these foundations, I will highlight applications where automated data science supports critical decision-making and societal resilience. Together, these directions illustrate a vision for human-centered, trustworthy AI systems that connect knowledge to story and story to impact.
  • Dr. Jiaqi 鈥淛ackey鈥 Gong is the Founding Director of the Alabama Center for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (ALAAI) and an Associate Professor of Computer Science at The University of Alabama. His research centers on knowledge graphs, large language models, and automated data science, with applications across health, environment, and education. He leads multiple federally funded initiatives on open knowledge networks, AI-enabled data storytelling, and AI for community resilience. Dr. Gong is also deeply committed to mentoring students, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing workforce development in trustworthy, human-centered AI.
