Two 成人直播 students are heading to Chicago to present their ideas for helping college communities fight childhood hunger.

Aiden 鈥淎J鈥� Norton and Trey Runner are members of Call to Serve, one of five teams selected as finalists in the inaugural . The competition challenged students from colleges and universities nationwide to develop ideas to support Blessings in a Backpack, a nonprofit that provides food for children on weekends. 

Their team, Call to Serve, which also includes Norton鈥檚 brother, Zakarie Benzid, a student at Northern Virginia Community College, went through two previous rounds of competition with students from more than 30 universities. The team submitted an executive summary in the first round after which eleven teams advanced. Groups then refined their ideas through video presentations, and the judges then selected the top five finalists to present in-person in Chicago on Nov. 6.

鈥淲e鈥檙e really excited to compete in this and to represent 成人直播,鈥� said Norton, a junior major in the , who discovered the competition through an Instagram post. 

Norton said the competition has deepened his understanding of food insecurity close to home. 

鈥淚 spent some time in Egypt for three months doing an internship, and I saw a lot of food insecurity there,鈥� Norton said. 鈥淪o that made me passionate about it in general, but working on this project really opened my eyes to how much food insecurity there is in our own backyard.鈥�

For Runner, an major, volunteering at MUST Ministries, where he helped prepare and serve food, also offered an up-close look at the need for support and programs.

鈥淚 got to see firsthand the struggles people face and the support they need,鈥� he said.

Blessings in a Backpack has provided more than 30 million hunger-free weekends for children since 2005. Through the competition, the organization hopes to engage more students, universities, and surrounding communities in supporting its mission.
