For 成人直播 student Drew Haase, solving that communication challenge is the focus of research that could help connect hard-to-reach locations using unmanned aerial vehicles.
The sophomore electrical engineering student in 成人直播鈥檚 is conducting research through the on a project titled 鈥淯AV-Internet of Remote Things (UAV-IoRT)鈥 under the guidance of Professor of Electrical Engineering Sumit Chakravarty. The project explores how unmanned aerial vehicles can strengthen wireless communication in remote and infrastructure-limited environments.
鈥淥ur solution is having a UAV or drone go out and collect the data and charge those devices as well, then bring it back so we can upload it to the cloud, where that information is easily accessed,鈥 Haase said.
The system uses drones as mobile communication platforms that travel between ground-based sensors and a central network hub. Along the way, the UAV collects information from remote devices, wirelessly transfers energy to keep them operational, and returns the data for users to access through cloud-based applications.
One of the project's primary applications is in agriculture, where sensors distributed across large fields can monitor conditions such as soil moisture, sunlight exposure, and water usage. Instead of requiring an extensive communication infrastructure, drones can gather the information directly and deliver it back to farmers and researchers.
Haase's role centers on developing the project's media access control, or MAC, protocol, which determines how devices communicate, transfer data, and manage energy resources.
The project has given Haase exposure to research typically encountered at the graduate level. While he admits the work can be complex, he said the experience has accelerated his academic development and helped him discover a specialization he hopes to pursue professionally.
鈥淭his opportunity has given me so much,鈥 Haase said. 鈥淚t's given me a passion for a career that I want to focus on. Originally, I liked electrical engineering in general, but I had no idea what I wanted to specialize in until this research opportunity.鈥
As the project continues, Haase and his research team plan to further test signal performance, improve communication between ground stations, and explore additional ways to expand the system's capabilities.
For Haase, the experience has transformed what began as an intimidating research opportunity into a clear vision for the future.
鈥淚 really want to continue working in the communications field,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 love the field, and that's what I want to end up doing.鈥
