Kennesaw State assistant professor blends art and technology to inspire next generation

Shuchita Mishra works at the intersection of art, education, business, and technology. The ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ assistant professor of illustration and sequential art comes to academia from a technology and marketing background, but couldn’t shake the artist within. Having developed a passion to tell stories with her drawings, she changed the course of her life and shifted focus to art education. After earning a Master of Fine Arts in Comics from the California College of the Arts, Mishra completed a writer’s residency at the Writer’s House in Pittsburgh while working for the Carnegie Museum of Art, then applied for a limited-term teaching position at Kennesaw State.

Volleyball star makes her mark at Kennesaw State on and off the court

On a recent morning at VyStar Arena at ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ Convocation Center, the arena staff started laying down the volleyball floor when a singing voice cut through the noise. Pushing a bicycle through a nearby hallway, ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ volleyball player Manu Johnsen announced her presence that morning in song, much the way as she has made her presence known at the Owls’ home arena and on campus. On the court, Johnsen will finish her volleyball career this fall as an all-timer for the Owls. The senior is a four-time all-conference selection and an academic all-conference selection as well. She has also represented her home country of Denmark in both beach and indoor volleyball.

Six years ago, Assistant Professor of Game Development Lei Zhang and his wife welcomed their first child into the world. However, at 8 months old, she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a rapidly progressing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Now, using virtual reality, Zhang is developing an immersive virtual reality therapeutic system where bereaved parents can meet online and support one another.

Kennesaw State art students receive top honors in national design competition

A group of ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ art students recently won top honors at a national graphic design competition. Senior art students Maura Nolan, Reagan Jowers, and Abby Paver took top prizes in the digital design category of the Robert Half contest sanctioned by Graphic Design USA, a national organization dedicated to promoting both digital and print design at the student and professional levels. In addition, junior art major Lydia Pruett and spring art graduate Madison Selby won honors in the package design category.

Kennesaw State researchers developing a system to improve classroom discussion

More than 200,000 middle and high school science teachers in the U.S. invest hours into planning lessons for students and spend even more time reflecting on how effective their teaching has been. Few, however, can analyze live classroom discussion and make real-time changes to their teaching to help struggling students understand the subject matter, something that ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ Associate Professor of Science Education Soon Lee and a fellow researcher are seeking to address.
